    I thank the team at The Australian Financial Review and their colleagues for their ventilation of issues surrounding the CFMEU.

    In answer to Chanticleer’s plaintive “How the hell did it come to this?” (“Labor’s ‘shocked and appalled’ act on CFMEU won’t work”), democracies by their nature involve dealmaking, compromises, exchanges of favours. Longstanding governments are especially vulnerable to cronyism, with boundaries stretching over time to the point where lines are crossed with less concern.
