Wediquette Wednesday: Should I offer to help my friend with her wedding?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question:A friend of mine is getting married in a few weeks and seems overwhelmed. The couple is only doing one attendant each, siblings, so other than her mom and the planner — for certain things — they don’t have a lot of help with last-minute details, such as running errands. I’d like to try to alleviate some of her stress and take something (or a few things) off her plate. Should I offer to help my friend with her wedding?

Answer: This one is easy — yes! It’s so kind of you to think of your friend and want to pitch in. Tell her you’d like to help, but only if it would make things easier on her. If she says yes, ask her to share a few items from her to-do list and tell her you will pick the tasks that you can handle. Before agreeing to anything, be sure to check your own to-do list and schedule so you don’t bite off more than you can chew and to avoid making things worse. Communication is key, so as you complete errands or other tasks let her know so she can tick them off the list. If she declines your help, respect her wishes and — if it makes sense for you — let her know she can reach out if she changes her mind.
