Wediquette Wednesday: Do we have to have an even number of attendants on each side for our wedding ceremony?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: I got engaged a few weeks ago and we’ve started talking about attendants for the wedding. I have three really close friends — one guy and two gals — and no siblings. He has two close friends and three siblings — two sisters and a brother. We are planning to do co-ed on each side, but we weren’t sure if we could get away with the uneven numbers. I’d rather not ask people I’m not as close to be in my wedding. Do we have to have an even number of attendants on each side for our wedding ceremony?

Answer: Congratulations on your engagement! There is no rule that says you have to have an even number of attendants. It’s much more meaningful to have people you are really close to and who really know you as an individual and a couple standing up for you on this important day.
