Week of August 14: Midsummer Mardi Gras, Romance and Birthday Parties

Birthday Party!

The historic Napoleon House celebrates the 253rd birthday of Napoleon Bonaparte on Tuesday, Aug. 15. The festivities kick off at 11:30 a.m. with a Champagne sabering ceremony and a special appearance by the emporer himself. There will, of course, be plenty of birthday cake and a special “La Fête de Napoleon” cocktail. C’est magnifique!

Reading Romance

Love is in the air this Saturday, Aug. 19, at Blue Cypress Books celebrating “Bookstore Romance Day.” Romance fiction takes center stage with crafts, goodies, giveaways and more. Events for all ages are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and then a special “After Dark” celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. for more mature readers, featuring an Adults-Only Steamy Storytime with romance writer Alexandra Vasti. It’s too hot outside to do anything, so it’s the perfect time to enjoy a great read in the comfort of the A/C. Pair with a cool beverage and you’re good to go!

Library Helpers

School is in full swing, so here’s a friendly reminder that the New Orleans Public Library has a full menu of homework help, research materials, test prep, reading coaches and much more. Check out their student resource page here. Plus, two snaps for implementing the new “Aunt Flow” program, which provides sanitary products in female and unisex bathrooms across the city, as well as free period packets with a month’s supply available by request, at no cost, at both MLK Library and Rosa F. Keller Library & Community Center, supplied through the Junior League’s Diaper & Period Supplies Bank.

Midsummer Mardi Gras

Midsummer Mardi Gras, sponsored by the Krewe of Oak, is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 26, so now is the time to get your glitter in gear. This year’s theme is “Blue Moon Rising,” with krewe members from the Muff-a-Lottas and the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus in attendance as well. Be sure to hit up local glitter and costume resources such as Glitter Box NOLA, NOLA Craft Culture, Fifi Mahoney’s, and the Mardi Gras Spot, just to name a few.
