It may seem odd that a great battle fought in Mexico on May 5, 1862, when the Mexican army defeated the nattily dressed French combat battalions of Napoleon III, is commemorated with such gusto in this European-influenced town.
But if you know New Orleans, you won’t find that strange at all. We are all about celebrating every nation’s special days. Besides, since Hurricane Katrina, we’ve seen a dramatic rise in our Hispanic population, and we’re happy they’re here.
The battle, fought just outside Mexico City, had great impact on America, which was embroiled at that time in the Civil War. In the end, with the Mexican defeat of the French, America would be claiming the mantle of strongest army in the world – a title we wear to this very day.
So, Cinco de Mayo isn’t some willy-nilly opportunity to celebrate an international friendship. May 5 is truly based on an important historical event for at least three countries. All the more reason to break out the tequila.

Take this moment to make a classic margarita, not some sickeningly sweet, pathetic caricature. No drink is easier to make, and no drink is poorly made as often. Do it right, in honor of international friendship.
Fresh Agave Margarita
1 1/2 ounces Don Julio Blanco
1/2 ounces fresh lime juice
1/2 ounces agave syrup
Lime wedge
Place all ingredients, except wedge, into shaker with ice. Shake well. Pour contents into short glass; garnish with lime. Enjoy.
