A former police officer, Iam Tucker took over her family’s company at the urging of her father, the late Robert Tucker, Jr., at age 25. It didn’t take long for her to see in herself what her father saw—immense business and leadership potential. The company that had nine employees then has grown to more than 50 today while also expanding its services and revenues. As a 100 percent female-owned, minority-owned, 8(a) Certified civil engineering firm, ILSI Engineering specializes in sewer, water, streets, and drainage design projects, stormwater management planning, and program and construction management.
Iam’s mission both professionally and personally is creating a more equitable environment for minority businesses.
“Equitable business is good business, and I intend to be a leader in that charge,” she says.
A passionate advocate for New Orleans, she is a member of African American Women of Purpose and Power, New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation, The Urban League of Louisiana Small Business Advisory Board, Crescent City Corps, and others. She credits community collaboration, her parents’ values, her team’s trust, and her own fortitude for her success. ILSI Engineering received the 2023 Ernest N “Dutch” Morial Award for Small Business of the Year. Last year, Trinity Episcopal School honored Iam with its Upstander Award for her work to make the world a better place.
