Rex turmoil flies into airline competition confusion
The Transport Minister seems too inclined to accept Australia’s two-airline syndrome, that a third player on the busiest routes will inevitably be trampled by Qantas.
The boardroom of Rex is in turmoil and it may not have made all the right business decisions. But the airline’s struggles just underline the basic lack of clarity over domestic and international airline regulation.
Last year, The Australian Financial Review revealed that Transport Minister Catherine King had dismissed an application by Qatar Airways to add extra capacity to help Australian inbound tourism to recover without any real explanation or reference to policy principles.
