    The debate over Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines has been “hijacked” by people with “specific agendas” against AUKUS, the chief of navy says.

    Offering a fierce defence of the pact, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond said Australia for more than a century had aspired to operate long-range submarines with the best technology available, which now happened to be nuclear propulsion.
