    Renee Wootton’s childhood in south-east Queensland took in the early divorce of her parents, custody battles, abuse, the suicide of her father and an escape to live with her aunt and uncle in a different state.

    “We had a pretty rough family situation,” Wootton, a Tharawal woman, says of her younger years.
