Uranium mining bans belong to a previous era
Labor’s efforts to keep Australia’s energy transition uranium mining free amount to a self-defeating hobbling of the nation’s green superpower hopes.
Anthony Albanese’s decision not to extend majority Rio Tinto-owned Energy Resources of Australia’s lease over the undeveloped Jabiluka uranium deposit in the Northern Territory is essentially a climate war political gesture.
It is aimed at Peter Dutton’s equally-politicised plan for a Coalition government to build seven nuclear reactors around the country, while also seeking to regain ground with Indigenous voters after last year’s crushing defeat of the Voice referendum.
